1901 – Frank Isbell of the White Sox sets a record by stranding 11 runners on base.

1934 – Babe Ruth announces that the ‘34 season will be his final as a full-time player.

1971 – Minnesota Twins slugger Harmon Killebrew becomes the 10th player in MLB history to reach the 500 home run mark.

1977 – The Phillies and Expos begin a double-header that ends at 3:23 AM.

1981 – Pete Rose picks up career hit #3,631 passing Stan Musial for the most in National League history.

1984 – The US beats Spain 96-65 to win the men’s basketball gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics.

1985 – Dave Kingman, then with the A’s, becomes the 21st player in MLB history to record 400 career home runs.

1986 – The Yankees hold “Billy Martin Day”, retiring the manager’s jersey number (#1).
