1906 – After pitching 187 consecutive complete games, Cubs pitcher Jack Taylor’s streak comes to an end with a three inning outing against the Dodgers.

1948 – The US wins the gold medal in men’s basketball, defeating France 65-21 at the Olympics in London.

1986 – USFL running back Herschel Walker signs with the Dallas Cowboys.

2006 – Indians first baseman Travis Hafner ties Don Mattingly’s MLB record with his sixth grand slam of the season.

2008 – Michael Phelps wins three gold medals and sets three world records in the same day, winning the 200 meter IM, 200 meter butterfly, and 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the Beijing Olympics.
