1923 – Future Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson records career strikeout #3,000. He’s the first pitcher in MLB history to reach that milestone and would finish his career with 3,508 Ks.

1926 – At Mitchell Field in New York, Babe Ruth catches a ball that had been dropped from an airplane flying at 250 feet.

1962 – Jackie Robinson becomes the first African-American player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1962 – Gary Player of South Africa becomes the first non-resident of the USA to win the PGA championship.

1963 – Sonny Liston knocks out Floyd Patterson in two minutes and 10 seconds in the first round to retain the world heavyweight title.

1997 – Braves pitcher Greg Maddux pitches a complete game against the Cubs, throwing just 76 pitches.
