Dutch Farms Athletes of the Week – 12/12/18

BOYS BASKETBALL: BRANDON NEWMAN – VALPARAISO VIKINGS

The Purdue bound Newman dominated in Valpo’s two games last week. In the road victory over Lowell, Newman posted a double-double by scoring 29 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Later in the week, in a 73-28 win at KV, Newman scored 32 points, grabbed seven boards and tallied five steals!

GIRLS BASKETBALL: SARAH MARTIN – KV KOUGARS

Sarah Martin made the most of limited playing time in two games last week. In a big win over Hanover Central, Martin scored 17 points and even more impressively in a win against NCC rival Hobart, Martin put up 21 points on just 10 field goal attempts!

BOYS SWIMMING: ETHAN CHURILLA – HIGHLAND TROJANS

Ethan Churilla had a record breaking week, setting the pool record at Merrillville high school in the 50 Free with a time of 21.38 seconds! He finished just short of another pool record in the 100 Free with a time of 47.88 seconds. He was also part of two winning relay teams – the 200 & 400 Freestyle. We have a feeling the Northwestern-bound swimmer will set a few more records by the time his Highland career wraps up.

GIRLS SWIMMING: EMMA KEENE – GRIFFITH PANTHERS

Griffith’s Emma Keene helped the Panthers to a third place finish at their hosted invite – their best finish in years – with wins in both the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke. She was also a big part of two second place relay times, in both the 200 Medley and 200 Freestyle!

WRESTLING: DONNELL WASHINGTON – PORTAGE INDIANS

The future Indiana Hoosier, and top ranked wrestler at 160lbs per Indianamat.com, had a great week on the mat, finishing with a 5-0 record, including going 4-0 at the annual Traicoff Invitational. Three of Washington’s wins came via fall, one was by major decision and the fifth was an 8-3 victory over the second ranked wrestler in the state.

Here’s video of Washington’s victory over Jordan Slivka in the finals of the Traicoff!
