• 1915 – Cubs pitcher George “Zip” Zabel has the longest relief appearance in baseball history. Zabel came into the game with two outs in the first inning and pitched the rest of the way of a 19 inning win.

  • 1924 – “Black Gold” wins the 50th Kentucky Derby.

  • 1925 – Hall of Famer Tris Speaker of the Cleveland Indians gets his 3,000th career hit.

  • 1970 – Hank Aaron becomes the ninth player in MLB history to record 3,000 career hits. He’s also the first player in MLB history to have 500 homers and 3,000 hits.

  • 1979 – The Phillies beat the Cubs 23-22 in 10 innings. The two teams combine for 50 hits and 11 homers. (Watch video highlights below!)

  • 1987 – The San Antonio Spurs win the NBA Draft lottery. They’ll go on to select David Robinson with the #1 overall pick.

  • 1992 – Gary Carter of the Montreal Expos becomes the third catcher in MLB history to play in 2,000 games.

  • 1995 – Jason Kidd (Dallas) & Grant Hill (Detroit) are named NBA Co-Rookies of the Year.

  • 1998 – Yankees pitcher David Wells throws a perfect game against the Minnesota Twins. It’s the 13th perfect game in MLB history.

  • 2009 – New York Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey balks three times in one game.
