Around the Region – Week #6

A quick look at most of the games taking place in Week #6!

HIGHLAND (3-2, 0-2) @ ANDREAN (2-3, 1-1)

It was the biggest win for Highland in years when the Trojans upset Andrean just a season ago at “The Zipper”. Don’t think that the Niners have forgotten about that one bit. It’s time for vengence at the Holy Lands. FAVORITE: Andrean

BISHOP NOLL (0-5, 0-3) @ RIVER FOREST (0-5, 0-3)

Just like last week when we had a battle of winless teams, we’re happy to see one team finally get in the “W” side of the 2016 ledger. River Forest has been competitive in most of their games this year and should come away with the win at “The Swamp”. FAVORITE: River Forest

BOONE GROVE (1-4, 0-3) @ NORTH NEWTON (4-1, 3-0)

The Spartans pulled off a surprise last week, defeating favored Wheeler while the Wolves dropped their third in a row, losing to Hanover Central. North Newton’s defense has been outstanding this entire season and all signs point to that continuing against a BG club that averages just 10 points a game. FAVORITE: North Newton

CALUMET (2-3, 2-1) @ LAKE STATION (2-3, 1-2)

Originally scheduled to be the opening of Calumet’s new football facility, the Warriors are forced to go on the road for the sixth straight week due to construction not being completed on Ridge Rd. Lake Station has already matched last season’s win total, while on more victory for Calumet and they’ll tie their mark from a year ago as well – these are clearly two programs that are getting better. FAVORITE: Pick ‘Em

PORTAGE (3-2, 2-1) @ CHESTERTON (2-3, 0-3)

How much does Chesterton wish they could go back to the non-conference portion of their schedule that saw them go 2-0? Since DAC play started, not only are the Trojans winless, but they’ve been outscored 103-27. This could be a good time to pick up that first DAC win as they host a Portage team that, despite their winning record, has scored just 21 points in the previous two weeks combined. FAVORITE: Portage

CLARK (0-5, 0-2) @ RENSSELAER (3-2, 1-1)

Clearly the Bombers are the better team and have the advantage of playing at home, so this will be a good game for Chris Meeks to get his underclassmen some Friday night playing time…and because he’s a class act that’s what to expect. With no JV game tomorrow, chances are it will happen sooner rather than later. Give the Clark players and coaches credit, despite having the score run up on them recently, they’re still fighting. FAVORITE: Rensselaer

CROWN POINT (2-3, 1-2) @ VALPARAISO (3-2, 2-1)

Crown Point’s defense has been solid all year, but if they ever need a week for their offense to break out and stay with their opponent, it’s this week. Even a good defense will only be able to reign in the Valpo attack for so long. FAVORITE: Valparaiso

EC CENTRAL (3-1, 3-0) @ MORTON (3-2, 2-0)

With the last two conference unbeatens squaring off, this game pretty much amounts to the GLAC championship. EC Central has established their presence with authority in their first year of conference play, but Morton has been the standard bearer for years – they won’t give up their conference legacy easily. FAVORITE: EC Central

GAVIT (1-3, 0-1) @ WEST SIDE (0-4)

The Gladiators were on the unfortunate end of a rout in a Indiana-Illinois showdown against Bloom Twp. With a trip to struggling West Side, all signs point to it being Gavit’s turn to get the better end of a one-sided affair. FAVORITE: Gavit

GRIFFITH (3-2, 2-1) @ MUNSTER (3-2, 2-0)

In another long-time rivalry that’s coming to an end, Griffith travels to the Marsh Lands in what used to be the “Bone Game” for the black and gold. The ‘Stangs sit atop the NCC standings thanks to a three game winning streak, but Griffith has a dominant edge in the series. A win for Munster would have them sitting pretty, while a win by Griffith will cause a logjam at the top of the conference. FAVORITE: Munster

KV (1-4, 0-3) @ HAMMOND HIGH (1-4, 0-2)

A “cat fight” in the city of Hammond, where the Wildcats will host the Kougars – both teams have only one win on the year, but KV has been consistently more competitive on the season, so they get the slightest of edges in this one. FAVORITE: KV

HOBART (3-2, 2-1) @ LOWELL (2-3, 2-1)

Two teams with some of the richest football histories in the state do battle at “The Inferno”.  Lowell is looking for a repeat from a week ago, when they put up 41 against Highland, while Hobart would like nothing more than to forget about last week, when they were routed by Andrean. FAVORITE: Pick ‘Em

LAKE CENTRAL (1-4, 0-3) @ MICHIGAN CITY (4-1, 2-1)

The Indians have lost four in a row, but were competitive against LaPorte a week ago, before the game getting away late. Michigan City had their most impressive win of the season last week at Merrillville, and now look to build off of that against LC. Expect a packed house at Ames Field – at least on the City side. FAVORITE: Michigan City

SOUTH CENTRAL (4-1, 2-1) @ WHEELER (2-3, 1-2)

Wheeler was shutout for the first time since 2010 last week against North Newton so expect the Bearcat offense to come out trying to prove a point. South Central can put up points of their own as they average over 26 a game. FAVORITE: Pick ‘Em

BOWMAN (0-5) @ HERITAGE CHRISTIAN (1-3)

The Eagles are still looking for their first points since Week #1. Luckily, Heritage Christian gives up over 34 a game. Bowman may or may not be able to come away with the “W” but it’s doubtful they’ll get shutout again. FAVORITE: Heritage Christian

CHAMPAIGN CENTRAL (1-3) @ ROOSEVELT (0-4)

At least the Panthers don’t have a long bus ride this week as they play their first home varsity game in over a month. FAVORITE: Pick ‘Em
