  • 1983 – The Washington Redskins defeat the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII. Washington RB John Riggins wins MVP.

  • 1993 – Emmitt Smith is named MVP of Super Bowl XXVIII as the Dallas Cowboys defeat the Buffalo Bills 30-13.

  • 1994 – The Boston Celtics retire Kevin McHale’s #32.

  • 1994 – US speed skater Dan Jansen sets a world record in the 500 at 35.76 seconds.

    1996 – Magic Johnson comes out of retirement after four years away from the NBA.

    2000 – The Rams defeat the Titans 23-16 in super Bowl XXXIV. St. Louis QB Kurt Warner wins MVP.

    2000 – Major League Baseball suspends John Rocker of the Atlanta Braves for controversial comments he made to Sports Illustrated.

    2002 – Karl Malone scores his 34,000th career point – only the second player in NBA history to reach that mark.
