  • 1920 – The Boston Red Sox officially sell Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for $125,000 and a $350,000 loan.

  • 1943 – For the first time in NHL history, goal is scored with all three points going to members of the same family. Reg Bentley of the Blackhawks gets the goal with assists coming from his brothers Max and Doug.

  • 1962 – Construction begins on the Houston Astrodome.

  • 1973 – A 12 person group, headlined by George Steinbrenner buys the Yankees for $10 million.

  • 1981 – The Cleveland Cavaliers retire Austin Carr’s #31.

  • 1983 – Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett sets an NFL record with a 99 yard touchdown run against the Minnesota Vikings.

  • 1991 – Wayne Gretzky scores his 700th career goal.

  • 1993 – In a wildcard playoff game, the Buffalo Bills execute the largest comeback in NFL history, erasing a 32 point deficit to defeat the Houston Oilers.

  • 1995 – The University of Nebraska wins its first NCAA football national championship since 1971 as they are the overwhelming choice in the Associated Press poll.

  • 1997 – Philadelphia Flyers forward Rod Brind’Amour scores his 200th career goal.

  • 2003 – Ohio State snaps Miami’s 34 game winning streak as the Buckeyes win their first football national championship in 34 years.

  • 2005 – The Anaheim Angels announce they officially changed their name to the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim.

  • 2010 – Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson sets and NFL record for yards from scrimmage with 2,509.

  • 2010 – Tony Romo sets a Cowboys record by being the first QB in franchise history to take every snap during the course of the season.

  • 2015 – A month shy of his 43rd birthday, Jaromir Jagr becomes the oldest player in NHL history to record a hat trick.

  • 2016 – Jimmy Butler breaks Michael Jordan’s Bulls record for points in a half, scoring 40 points in the second half of a game against the Raptors. Butler had two points in the first half.
