  • 1890 – American sprinter John Owen Jr. becomes the first amateur to run the 100 yard dash in under 10 seconds

  • 1911 – Ty Cobb wins the first AL MVP award while Frank Schulte wins the NL MVP. Both players receive automobiles as part of their prize

  • 1923 – Babe Ruth hits two homers in a World Series game

  • 1924 – The Boston Bruins and Montreal Maroons were granted NHL franchises

  • 1925 – The New York Giants play in their first NFL game, a 14-0 loss to Providence

  • 1927 – Lou Gehrig is named AL MVP

  • 1943 – The Yankees beat the Cardinals in Game #5 to win the 40th World Series. They are the first team to win 10 championships

  • 1959 – NFL Commissioner Bert Bell dies of a heart attack during a Philadelphia Eagles game at Franklin Field

  • 1975 – Future NHL Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier records his first career hat trick

  • 1984 – Mario Lemieux makes his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He scores his first career goal on his first shot on his first shift

  • 1992 – Deion Sanders suits up for both the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Braves in the same day

  • 1998 – Steve Young becomes the 20th quarterback in NFL history to throw for 30,000 career yards

  • 1999 – After not starting due to back pain, Pedro Martinez of the Red Sox comes out of the bullpen to throw six innings of no-hit baseball to help Boston win Game #5 in an ALDS matchup against the Indians

  • 2004 – The Houston Astros win a post-season series for the first time in franchise history, defeating the Braves in the NLDS

  • 2006 – Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle and his flight instructor are killed when Lidle’s plane crashes into a high-rise apartment building in New York City

  • 2013 – Merrillville snaps Lake Central’s six game winning streak with a 20-17 Pirate win at “The Burial Grounds”. The Indians do get revenge in the sectional championship in early November. Highlights of the Merrillville win over LC & other games from October 11 below!
