Around the Region: Week #4

A quick look at most of the games taking place in Week #4!

MUNSTER (1-2, 1-0) @ ANDREAN (1-2, 0-0)

One of these teams is going to fall off the pace in the NCC title hunt as Andrean plays in the first conference game and Munster comes in after their shellacking of rival Highland. The Mustangs picked up a 24 point win in their meeting last season, but this one’s on Broadway and you know Andrean remembers the beating the ‘Stangs put on them a year ago. FAVORITE: Pick ‘Em

SOUTH CENTRAL (2-1, 0-1) @ BISHOP NOLL (0-3, 0-1)

So which team are the Satellites really? The one that was vicotrious in their first games or the one that lost to previously winless Calumet a week ago? They better hope it’s the former, because another team still seeking win #1 is on the docket this week. A loss at Noll would make for a very long ride back to Union Mills. FAVORITE: South Central

LAKE STATION (1-2, 0-1) @ BOONE GROVE (1-2, 0-1)

Could this game be what the Lake Station offense has needed? In their two losses this year, the Eagles have scored 15 points…combined. However the Boone Grove defense has given up a combined 82 points in their losses. Whoever wins this matchup of struggling phases of football will likely come out on top on the scoreboard. FAVORITE: Pick ‘Em

THORNRIDGE (IL) (2-0) @ BOWMAN (0-3)

Thornridge crosses state lines with an unblemished 2-0 mark. Bowman’s been outscored 105-14 on the season. Considering their first three games were at Delphi and then back to back trips to Indy….at least the Eagles don’t have to travel. FAVORITE: Thornridge

CALUMET (1-2, 1-0) @ NORTH NEWTON (2-1, 1-0)

It’s another road game versus conference foe that is not exactly geographically close. Can Calumet win back to back games after spending so much time on the bus? Despite their 2-1 mark, North Newton has struggled offensively, scoring just 42 points in three games. The defense though has been tough, surrendering  only 23. If they can avoid turnovers and giving the Warriors good field position, the defense should be able to hold up once again. FAVORITE: North Newton

CHESTERTON (2-1, 0-1) @ LAPORTE (3-0, 1-0)

A week after playing a team that loves to run the football, and losing to them, Chesterton gets….a team that loves to run the football and barely throws. The Slicers ground attack is putting up 29 points a game this season and the Chesterton offense has really struggled at times, including being shut out by Michigan City last week. FAVORITE: LaPorte

HIGHLAND (2-1, 0-1) @ CLARK (0-3, 0-1)

After riding high with a 2-0 record, the Trojan horse was beaten soundly by a different type of horse, in this case Mustangs, last week.  Highland won this game 62-0 a year ago. Don’t be surprised if they try to match or best that mark against the 17 Pioneers that will be in uniform. FAVORITE: Highland

EC CENTRAL (1-1, 1-0) @ GAVIT (1-1, 0-0)

You can’t say these two teams aren’t well rested. After unexpected “bye” weeks in Week #3, the Cardinals and Gladiators square off in what could be the GLAC title game. There’s going to be no shortage of points scored – if you’re betting, take the over. FAVORITE: Pick ‘Em

HAMMOND HIGH (0-3, 0-1) @ MORTON (2-1, 1-0)

As mentioned above, the winner of Gavit-EC Central could have a huge leg up in the GLAC title race. That used to go to the winner of this game as city rivals Hammond High & Morton square off. Morton looks much improved after their opening night loss to Highland while the ‘Cats still look for win #1. FAVORITE: Morton

HANOVER CENTRAL (3-0, 1-0) @ RIVER FOREST (0-3, 0-1)

“Close but no cigar” has been the theme for River Forest through the opening weeks of this season as three winnable games have all been losses. Keeping close to Hanover Central may seem like a victory though as the Wildcats have the area’s best scoring offense and stingiest scoring defense. FAVORITE: Hanover Central

HOBART (2-1, 1-0) @ KV (1-2, 0-1)

The Brickies needed just three big plays in the first half to defeat Griffith last week. Expect more opportunities for large gains against a Kougar defense that gives up 25 points a game. FAVORITE: Hobart

MERRILLVILLE (2-1, 1-0) @ PORTAGE (2-1, 1-0)

Everyone remembers Portage upsetting Lake Central in the post-season last year, but don’t forget the Indians also put a huge scare into Merrillville before the Pirates got the win. Portage is clearly better than they were a year ago….Merrillville might not be as good as they were in 2015….should be an interesting one. FAVORITE: Pick ‘Em

VALPARAISO (1-2, 0-1) @ MICHIGAN CITY (3-0, 1-0)

Don’t be fooled by Valpo’s 1-2 mark…they’re better than a .333 ball club. This will definitely be the biggest barometer for the surging Wolves. A win at home would leave very few questions about how good they are this year. FAVORITE: Michigan City

WHEELER (2-1, 1-0) @ WHITING (3-0, 1-0)

Not only did Whiting move up the RSN rankings to #3, they are also the #1 team in Class 2A in the most recent AP poll. Wheeler upset Whiting a year ago, so revenge is going to be fresh on the minds of all the Oilers. FAVORITE: Whiting

ROOSEVELT (0-3) @ SYCAMORE (IL) (0-2)

The Panthers travel out to DeKalb County in Illinois for their Saturday afternoon matchup against winless Sycamore. Roosevelt has scored only 20 points so far this season but Sycamore has given up 64 in two games. Good time for the Panthers to come alive. FAVORITE: Pick ‘Em
